"This will be a sign to
you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
-Luke 2: 12
Superman
Have you ever thought about how
our society views comic book superheroes? There seems to be a resurgence
in our fascination with superheroes with movies in the recent past
about Spiderman, The X-Men, Daredevil, etc... These superheroes
usually have supernatural powers (the ability to fly, x-ray vision,
become invisible, etc...), amazing strength and speed. They are
always victorious. Or how about another type of 'hero' of many of
our youth today? The sports star or rock celebrity? Many of these
stars are high profile ('look at me') type of people who have incredible
wealth and the power that comes with it. They have tremendous influence
over our culture because of their fame. The 'true' supermen (superwomen)
of our world?
Jesus would not have fit the world's view of a Superman. Born into
a poor family, in the lowliest of places (see Luke 2: 12
above). Having all (and more---after all He is God's Son) of the
supernatural powers of even the greatest of our comic book heroes.
Deserving of all the fame, wealth, and power that this world can
give, Jesus chose to live His life seeking and serving the lost.
Using His powers to cure the sick and to give strength & hope
to the weak. Like Superman, of the comic books, Jesus did have a
'kryptonite (weakness).' Jesus' weakness (kryptonite) is His love
for you, me, and all people. It is because of that love that Jesus
allowed Himself to be sacrificed (see John 19: 17-18 below)
for all of those people who know Him and love Him, those who have
never even heard His name, and even those who mock Him, deny Him,
and in the end killed Him. Now that is a true Superman! Never seeking
the fame, wealth, and power that this world has to offer its 'superheroes,'
Jesus instead lived a life of humble service. Each day living to
do God's will. The world may not recognize this as very heroic but
in God's eyes the true supermen and superwomen of this world are
those that are living their lives to serve, teach, and reach others
for God.
Remember that in those difficult moments in life that the greatest
Superman of all, Jesus, is on your side. He will meet your every
need and see you through the hard times. He is also there to rejoice
with you in the good times!
I pray that things are well with you. Please let me know if you
have any prayer concerns or praises. Have a great week and remember
to smile :), the Lord loves you!
In Christ,
Shan D. Hartsough
"Carrying his own cross,
he went out to the place of the skull. Here they crucified him,
and with him two others-one on each side and Jesus in the middle."
-John 19: 17-18
